Compassion

As the republican governor of our beloved old home state finished his speech by calling out our president it was a momentary, sweet relief to think that perhaps, finally, the republican party might become more vocal in their dissent and as a result bring us all a bit closer together again. I started to cry listening to his words as simply hearing a conservative party leader offer compassion and support for our black community was such a balm to my increasingly cynical, weary heart. And then he choked up as his spoke these last words and I cried some more. I was going to begin my day writing letters of disgust and angry calls to action, but instead decided to write a letter of thanks to Baker for his words and begged him to get a megaphone to amplify them further afield in the hopes that he might gather more of his compatriots together and shift our division every so slightly - NOW - when we need it the most.
